How the story begins
Nutzie lived in the coziest hollow of the great oak, but for days now she couldn't sleep well.
Creak-creak-creak came from below. Hooo-hooo came from above. Splash could be heard in the distance. Grrrr emerged from among the leaves.
Her heart beat fast with every noise. “Mom,” she whispered, “something is happening out there.”

Guide for families
💭 What is this story about?
Nutzie is a little squirrel who can't sleep because the forest sounds frighten her. With her mom's help, she learns to distinguish between dangerous and safe sounds using her heart and her body as guides. The story teaches that our emotions and physical sensations are valuable tools for understanding the world.
🧠 What will children learn?
- To recognize that fear is normal and useful
- To differentiate between real and imaginary dangers
- To use their body and emotions as sources of information
- To develop confidence to explore the world step by step
- To value the accompaniment and patience of adults
🤝 How to continue this conversation?
- “Do you remember a sound that scared you? How did your body feel?”
- “What does your heart do when you're nervous?”
- “How do I help you when you're scared?”
- “What sounds make you feel safe at home?”
🧭 The Body Gives Warnings, but Not Always
The body's signals are a valuable source of information, but not the only one: some dangers make no noise and don't speed up the heart, like pool water or crossing the street. That's why it helps to remind little ones that the family's safety rules always apply, even when we feel calm. A simple phrase sums it up well: “Your body gives you clues, and the rules keep us safe even when everything seems calm.”
🎯 Educational Approach
This story uses body wisdom and emotional regulation as the foundation for developing confidence. It doesn't minimize children's fears, but validates them and offers practical tools for managing them. If children experience intense fears that interfere with sleep or daily activities, consider consulting with a child health professional.
